TechnologyWith the first quarter of 2014 well underway, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has released their predictions for what will be the most talked about technology trends for 2014.

1. Emergence of the Mobile Cloud

Mobile and cloud nets are coming together to create a whole new platform that could potentially lead to many new devices.  Current mobile devices are constrained by their memory, processing power, and battery life.  If a cloud allowed computing, data processing and storage to take place outside of the device, the new device possibilities are numerous.

2. From Internet of Things to Web of Things

A Web of Things takes advantage of mobile devices’ and sensors’ ability to observe and monitor their environments.  This increases the coordination between real world things and their Web counterparts.  The Web of Things will produce large amounts of data related to the physical world, and intelligent solutions are necessary to enable connectivity, inter-networking, and relevance between the physical world and the digital world resources.

3. From Big Data to Extreme Data

The technology world hasn’t caught up with the need for trained data scientists that can take the massive amounts of data that organizations gather and put it into a meaningful perspective.  The era of extreme data will require new practices in data management and analytics.

4. The Revolution Will Be 3D

3D printing tools are empowering everyone from global corporations to do-it-yourselfers to create new devices quickly, easily, and a lower cost.  3D printers are changing the way hardware is designed, prototyped, and produced.

5. Supporting New Learning Styles

With Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on the rise, there will be a need for technology to support these new learning systems and styles.  MOOCs are creating a demand for education that is seamless, ubiquitous, and contextual.

6. Next-generation Mobile Networks

As mobile phones allow us to do even more, mobile computing systems must rise to the demands.  The Cisco Visual Networking Index: Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update, projects that global mobile data traffic will increase 18-fold between 2011 and 2016.  While urban areas take advantage of robust networking infrastructure, many use a mobile device within a degraded network.  Researchers must develop tools and applications that will prevent quality issues.

7. Balancing Identity and Privacy

While social networks allow for easy communication and collaboration over the Internet, there are many privacy and identity issues involved as well.  Changes will most likely occur to ensure our safety on the internet.

8. Smart and Connected Healthcare

Individual health will improve with the development of intelligent systems, apps, and mobile systems that focus on diet, exercise, and information provision.  Information systems are also expected to assist with large-scale analysis of biomedical data, socially relevant data, and metadata such as the spread of disease.

9. E-Government

Information communication technology will be used to provide improved government services, transactions, and interactions with citizens, businesses, and other branches of the government.  Challenges arise with e-government interoperability in cloud computing, open government, and smart city initiatives.

10. Scientific Cloud Computing

Scientific computing is allowing for breakthroughs that were not possible just a few years ago and comes in many forms: high-performance computing (HPC), high-throughput computing (HTC), many-task computing (MTC), and data-intensive computing. These cutting-edge techniques are allowing “grand challenges” to be solved.
